From workload to social distractions, adult learning is a hot topic filled with challenges. Luckily, those challenges can be overcome with the right knowledge and determination.
Whether you’re a new architecture grad who is ready to start your career or a currently employed individual seeking licensure, here are the top four factors to consider when embarking on your journey of ARE Prep.
1. Have a Solid Study Plan
If you’ve ever spent all night studying right before a test, you probably know that last minute cramming isn’t a great idea. It’s difficult for us to remember things that we haven’t practiced or seen more than once. Having a set study plan for the ARE will not only help you become better prepared for the exam, but also increase your knowledge and skill set in the industry at the same time.
To create a great study plan:
- Know the exam. Note the names of all six divisions of the ARE 5.0, plan in which order you will take them, and know the best tips for passing the ARE. If there is a division you’re particularly worried about, tackle it first so you’ll have confidence when studying the other five.
- Make time. If possible, block out time to study each day. If you’re working full-time or have other commitments, be realistic about your allocated study time and make sure it fits your schedule. Avoid consecutive hours of study time and remember to take short breaks.
- Limit distractions. If possible, turn off your phone while studying, and avoid multitasking to increase your retention.
Once you have a study plan in place, it’s time to gather the study materials. Remember to take advantage of auditory and visual resources to maximize your learning potential.
2. Know Your Resources
Finding adequate architect exam prep materials can be tricky. The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) breaks down the format for the ARE 5.0, so you can select the most relevant architecture exam preparation materials with confidence. When selecting your materials, consider both free options and subscriptions to fully prepare.
Free Resources
Resources such as online podcasts, blogs, YouTube videos, and downloadable content, are great for diving into the world of architecture, or if you’re wanting to brush up on your knowledge. These resources can answer general questions about passing the ARE and offer great supplemental content. What’s more, studies have shown that switching up your study methods and materials will improve your retention rate.
Test Prep Membership
Investing in a test prep membership, or getting your firm to pay for it, can give you the support you need throughout your test prep journey. This is a great option if you are looking for long-term architecture registration exam prep courses and additional materials.

3. Utilize Extra Support From the ARE Community

With the ARE Community on your side, you can:
- Easily track conversations around certain topics.
- Get expert help and advice.
- Form study groups to tackle the toughest questions.
The community is very active and new content is added constantly to help you with your architecture exam preparation. Checking the community regularly throughout your journey will help to keep you updated, motivated, and supported for all things ARE.
4. Take the ARE 5.0 in Person or Online
You can now take the ARE 5.0 in person or online. Make sure you decide which is best for you ahead of time so you can keep your stress level at a minimum.
If you’re interested in online proctoring, ask yourself:
- Do I have the required setup and the quiet space either at the office or at home to take this exam uninterrupted?
- Am I comfortable troubleshooting my own IT issues?
- Would I be more comfortable taking the test online or in person?
If in-person proctoring is the better option for you, make sure you know the exam location and have your transportation plans confirmed. No matter which testing option you choose, be sure to try a demo exam to familiarize yourself with navigating the test.
