Sometimes called the “schematic design” phase, this is where the inner problem-solver in you gets to go nuts. It’s like those murder mystery board games where you look at different clues to figure out “who done it?”. But in the architectural context, it’s about looking at the variables to figure out “what to do?”, “how to do it?”, and “where to do it?”. It’s as much about knowing the right questions to ask, as it is having the right answers. In this video series, a team of seasoned architects will show you the ropes. They’ll point out why you should consider things like the surrounding neighborhood, weather, sun, codes, and regulations to determine a building’s orientation, shape, height, and systems.
A series of videos show you how some of the world’s most respected architects, handled some very interesting design challenges and parameters. In California, Scott Parker of Studio 111 talks schematic design and the challenges faced with the structural system, as well as the local area. Laura Crane of bKL Architecture describes how the client and existing buildings influenced the design of Parcel O in Chicago. And in Dallas, Jon Bailey of HKS walks through the neighborhood and environmental considerations they faced as they planned the design of one of Dallas’s most beautiful plazas.
And that’s just the beginning.
